The Diocese of South Dakota Canon for finance and propertyThis canon plays a central role in guiding the critical financial and property operations of the geographically vast entity. In other words, the Church’s ambitious and spirited goals must somehow reconcile with difficult economic realities. Canons for finance and property are responsible for promoting such reconciliations under the leadership and direction of Bishop The Rt. Reverend Jonathan H. Foltz.

The financial and property canon has many responsibilities. To achieve this, you must use Microsoft Excel regularly, professionally, and confidently. On a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, much of Kanon’s time is spent working on:

  • Create an initial budget for next year. In a place like South Dakota Parish, this is more art than science.
  • Manage your monthly payroll and payroll tax.
  • Communicate between insurance companies and the South Dakota Episcopal Church.
  • After paying, claim property insurance.
  • Maximize maintenance effort per dollar.
    • Remind people that they have a limited budget for this.
  • Manage property held by the parish.
    • We secure competitive lease rates.
    • Maintain accurate records of payments for each land.
  • Get guidance from the parish investment committee on trading and strategy.

This position is located in Pierre, South Dakota and offers a salary of $53,000 and excellent benefits including employer contributions to a pension or retirement savings account and 85% employer-paid health insurance.

Required Abilities:

  • Microsoft Office, especially Excel (expertise required);
  • attention to detail;
  • Basic knowledge of accounting;
  • good organizational skills;
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn.and
  • Excellent communication, listening and cross-cultural skills.
