Retired United captain leaves for final flight with daughter as co-pilot – NBC Chicago

Retirement

When veteran United Airlines captain Chris Bales takes off on his last flight before retirement, he has not only a colleague as his co-pilot, but someone very special to him.

Bales will conclude his 38-year career with United on Sunday with his daughter, first officer Allie Bales, as co-pilot on the final flight, according to a United Airlines news release.

Of Chris’ three daughters, only Allie decided to follow in his footsteps.

According to an earlier NBC News article, Allie and Chris Bales commanded their first commercial flight as co-pilots in November, a 12-hour journey from O’Hare Airport to Tokyo.

With Chris nearing retirement and Ally joining United in July, both feared the flight would not materialize.

“There is a moment when you show up and I know it will be the best day of your life.

A father and daughter aren’t the only family members who work for airlines. Two of Ally’s uncles were pilots for United, the third a flight attendant, and two aunts.

If having Ally by your side wasn’t enough, United will pay tribute to Chris’ illustrious career with a water cannon salute on Sunday.
