job summary

This position serves as a leader in men’s and women’s Nordic skiing and embraces a vision of principled leadership, academic integration and competitive excellence. Head coaches are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of student-athletes and for achieving and maintaining peak performance. This position is an important ambassador for the track and field team and the university and should reflect the highest levels of integrity, ethical behavior and adherence to Ivy League principles. The overall success of the program begins with the leadership of the head coach.

This position typically requires extensive experience in sports coaching, with a strong preference for coaching at the college level. Equivalent experience may include playing and/or coaching in a professional or other high performance environment, such as national team or Olympic level, particularly for sports that are more prominent at an international level than in the United States.

This is a fixed term position renewable at the discretion of the Athletics Director.

1. Athlete team management

  • Practice planning and instruction, as well as in-game coaching. Develop the knowledge and skills of student-athletes in sports and enable teams to perform at a competitive level.
  • Spread educational culture through physical education. Ensuring student-athletes receive meaningful direction and support from their coaches by fostering a spirit of continuous improvement and learning. It balances athletics within an academic context.
  • Develop and oversee plans for the recruitment and retention of student-athletes consistent with the values ​​of excellence and inclusion. Responsible for strategy impact on team performance and reputation.
  • Lead and communicate with student-athletes reliably and effectively. Mentor student-athletes who accept leadership roles. Use athletics to educate students about character building and accountability.
  • Ensures academic integration of student-athletes with Harvard values.

2. Operational complexity

  • Develop and oversee execution of team strategy, budget, logistics and operational direction. Develop and execute national and international recruitment strategies as required.
  • Ensures compliance with University, Ivy League, NCAA, and other rules and regulations, including the University’s Conflict of Interest and Commitment Policy.
  • Leads, directs, and reviews the work of assistant coaches. Recruitment and training of assistant coaches.
  • Participate in professional development and sports governance/leadership activities.
  • Identify, research and implement innovation opportunities/trends as appropriate.
  • Frequently identify and solve problems of a complex nature that impact the team and may require complex solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with athletics administrators.

3. Communication and influence

  • Communicate effectively with the Harvard community, including students, faculty, alumni, and donors.
  • Generate interest and enthusiasm for sports within and outside the Harvard community.
  • Responsible for maintaining and building high viewership and public interest in contests consistent with applicable sports.
  • Maintain and typically foster positive media interest consistent with the sport in question.
  • Respond appropriately to media inquiries.
  • It requires the ability to positively impact the public interest where appropriate.

4. Talent management

  • Recruiting assistant coaches and team management staff.
  • Guides, directs, and sets goals for assistant coaches and staff.
  • Monitor and review the work of assistant coaches and staff, provide timely feedback, and take prompt corrective action when necessary.
  • Keep abreast of Harvard policies, communications and initiatives related to employee relations and keep assistant coaches and staff informed as needed.
  • Respond promptly to complaints by or against assistant coaches and staff in accordance with University policy.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Proven technical knowledge of Nordic ski training, technique and competition
  • Proven organizational and time management skills
  • good communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with alpine coaches in managing program resources and budgets

Basic qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 5 seasons of Nordic ski coaching at university, professional or Olympic level is required (club coaching will be considered). Competing experience as a Nordic skier at university, national or Olympic level counts towards this requirement.

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • CPR and first aid are required.
