Google Pixel 7A review: The new mid-range standard

Sub Levels

last week One of the busiest I’ve ever been. I flew to Dallas, Texas for a friend’s wedding, drove to Austin, visited my in-laws, drove back for the wedding, drove back to New York, and Googled I/O 2023. Good. The news is that the new Google Pixel 7A has been in my pocket throughout all my legs and layovers. This is a $499 phone and proves you don’t have to spend more to get a good experience these days.

Is it the perfect phone? no. It lacks features that some people want. Battery life is also decent, and the price is $50 more than last year’s model. To remedy this, Google continues to sell his Pixel 6A from last year at a low price ($349), though it typically retails for $299. That phone is still a good buy at either price, but if you feel like you should spend a little more, the Pixel 7A has pretty much everything you need.

new standard

The Pixel 7A mimics the design of the previous Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 series. It’s clean, unique, and easy to find in a sea of iPhones and Samsungs. want to feel different. Available in Charcoal (black), Sea (baby blue), Snow (white), and Coral (orange-pink), the latter exclusive to the Google Store. Blue is a little too pale for me and often looks white, but coral is so gorgeous. I love fancy phones.

The phone’s frame is made from recycled aluminum, and the back is a plastic composite that never feels cheap. (One less cracked spot on the glass in case you drop the phone!) The front is made of Gorilla Glass 3, a product several years old at this point, and it scratches as much as modern prescriptions. Corning Corporation manufactures hardened glass that is not resistant to cracks or cracks. Using old Gorilla Glass is one easy way to keep the price of your handset down.Needless to say, it’s worth buying a case even if the back doesn’t crack easily. teeth However, it has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, so you can drop it in the pool without breaking it.

The 6.1-inch OLED screen showed no weaknesses, even when I stared at it while walking in full sun in Austin (not to mention 94-degree heat and uncomfortable levels of humidity). Is it as bright as the rival Samsung Galaxy A54 5G? No, but I rarely had to squint to read the display. That means the screen has more frames per second than traditional 60Hz screens, so everything from playing games to scrolling Instagram feels smoother. It’s a nice perk.

Performance is fine. The Pixel 7A is powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chipset with 8GB of RAM. This is the exact same stack as the flagship Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. I have never seen a 7A stutter on a phone. The chipset will give access to many of the same G2-specific software features that debuted on the Pixel 7 series, such as long exposure and Photo Unblur in the camera app. bottom Effectively removes some facial blur in my photo of the dance floor at the wedding.

The Pixel 7A is one of the few phones with wireless charging under $500. It’s much more comfortable to put your smartphone on a stand than to hunt for cables. That said, 7A do Skip the other features you might have wanted to see, like a headphone jack, microSD card slot, and wall charger (although a USB-C to USB-C cable is included). Also, the phone’s internal storage is limited to 128 GB. I wish Google would take a page from Motorola and start offering 256 gigs.

Google has long been underperforming with its in-display fingerprint sensor, and unfortunately the Pixel 7A is following the same path. On my first day of use, I had to tap my thumb on the sensor a few times to unlock it. It’s improved a lot over time, but it required me to be more conscious and careful about finger placement than on other phones such as the aforementioned A54.
